Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom and part of the West Midlands region, has a light rail system which dates back to 1996 and is operated as a single metro line.
In 2016, to increase connections between various parts of the metropolitan region, the public transport authority, West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), decided to extend the network. To do so, it set up Midland Metro Alliance (MMA) which consists of the WMCA, a joint venture (JV) of design experts including Egis, Tony Gee and Pell Frischmann and a lead construction specialist, Colas Rail.
Egis is the senior partner of the design experts JV which was awarded the design of the 6 (six) metro line extensions.
Egis was selected on the basis of its global expertise from designing to commissioning tram networks.
On the technical side, the Egis JV has been tasked with designing:
- track alignment and trackform
- systems including signalling, overhead line equipment, power, telecoms and lighting
- urban realm
and also deliver:
- systems integration management
- a Network Operation Plan (NOP)
- testing and commissioning.
Using its experience, Egis contributed to installation and commissioning of the first catenary-free tram system in the UK.
