By winning two major mobility projects for the construction of tramways in Canada and the United States, Egis keeps asserting and making a reality its objective of becoming a major player on the North American market and participating in the sustainable transformation of the region's infrastructure.
The Purple Line, north of Washington DC
The 26 km Purple Line is one of the most ambitious rail P3 projects ever delivered in the U.S. Served by 21 stations, the line will link Prince George's and Montgomery counties, just outside of Washington D.C. The route has been designed to interconnect all lines converging to the federal capital. Thus, the Purple Line connects the red, green and orange lines of Washington DC's existing metro system, commuter trains (operated by MARC), regional rail lines (operated by Amtrak), and local and regional buses.
Egis, as Independent Engineer on behalf of the concessionaire (Purple Line Transit Partners) and the owner (Maryland Department of Transportation/Maryland Transit Administration), will review technical submissions, drawings and perform on-site inspections paving the way for the Purple Line LRT commissioning at the end of 2027. The dedicated team combines LRT (Light Rail Transit) technical experts based in the USA, Canada and Europe.
The Gatineau-Ottawa tramway
Eventually the new 24-kilometers tramway line, comprising 37 stations, will link the west of Gatineau (Quebec) and the city centres of Gatineau (Quebec) and Ottawa (Canada's National Capital), while providing an innovative and sustainable transport alternative in a context of demographic growth in the region.
The Groupe Porteur, formed by Egis alongside SYSTRA Canada (lead company) and EXP, has been awarded the professional, technical and multidisciplinary services contract by the Société de transport de l'Outaouais (STO) for the project. Under this contract, worth a total value of $114 million CAD, Groupe Porteur will support the Project Office through all phases of the tramway project.
Egis will bring its expertise in the following areas:
- Preliminary studies (in collaboration with SYSTRA Canada and EXP): infrastructure, systems, environment and geotechnical
- Infrastructures design
- Project management: design and upgrade of the portage bridge
- Tramway systems: traction, security and maintenance center’s design
Egis rail expertise at the service of North America
These two major programs complete the list of major rail projects on which Egis is already involved across the world and in North America in particular, thus reaffirming the Group's position as one of the world leaders in the rail industry and strengthening its presence in the dynamic North American market. By continuing to act in key and critical sectors such as decarbonized transport, Egis also fulfills its commitment to being a driving force in the sustainable development of the region's infrastructures.
