At the conference, Christophe will present his latest research under the West African Coastal Areas Vulnerability Assessment (WACA-VAR) project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to safeguard the shores of West Africa from rising sea levels, intensified storms, and rapid urbanisation. His white paper, titled Empowering West African stakeholders with enhanced coastal data management, introduces innovative satellite-derived data models and a state-of-the-art GIS dashboard, providing decision-makers with the insights needed to implement effective coastal risk mitigation measures.
With over 40% of the world’s population living within 100 kilometers of a coastline, the increasing threats from sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and unregulated urban expansion demand urgent action. In West Africa alone, approximately 31% of the population resides in coastal areas, many of which are highly vulnerable to accelerated erosion and flooding. These challenges have economic repercussions as well, coastal degradation is estimated to cost West African nations billions of dollars annually in damage to infrastructure, loss of livelihoods, and ecosystem disruption.
